Vintage G. Pruefer Bb and A LP Boehm Clarinet Set
$1595
Here's a rare c.1920 vintage A & Bb LP Boehm system clarinet set by George Pruefer, of Rhode Island USA. They have grenadilla wood bodies with solid nickel alloy keys, posts and rings, and a generous bore of .585". They are 7 ring models with articulated C#'s and were likely custom ordered by a professional musician. All pieces are original, no cracks or repairs to body. Quality of manufacture is high, with beautiful wood, post locks on the lower body, and the custom key work. The Bb even sports an original tunable barrel!
Pruefer was a noted instrument builder from the late 19th century until the factory burned down in the early 1970's. Exact dating is difficult, as the 1,4xx series serial numbers (one digit apart between the A and Bb!) are earlier than any extant list, or any Pruefer I've worked on. I would guesstimate about WWI, plus or minus a few years.
They've been disassembled, soaked in bore oil, swedged and countersunk, body, keys and posts buffed, white Roo leather pads and key/tenon corks installed. They're in great shape for their age and have a warm, open tone with good intonation and comfortable ergonomics. Comes with period (possibly original) triple case in solid condition. The 3rd instrument in the picture is a HP Bb clarinet by Pruefer that came with the pair, but doesn't play in tune with modern instruments. I didn't overhaul it, but can include it in the sale, if the buyer wants it... or I might make a lamp out of it!
