Vintage Rampone Stencil Eb Alto Saxophone
$625
A rare late 1940's/early 50's vintage 'Columbiana' stencil Eb alto saxophone made by Rampone of Italy. These are cool, hand-made instruments, just not well known in the US. They combine design elements of Conn, Martin and others (check out the swivel thumbrest and 'nail file' G# key) to achieve an original look and good playability for a modest price. I think vintage Italian instruments (many of them stenciled for US catalogs, distributors and music stores) may be the next wave, once US and French built horns are priced beyond the reach of most players! It is lacquered brass and is in good condition for its age, with evidence of minor dent work and a resoldered C# post - nothing that materially impacts looks or playability.
Its been disassembled, cleaned, swedged and countersunk (to tighten the mechanism) posts aligned, tone holes leveled, rods trued, all new tan leather pads (with flat brown plastic resos) and key corks installed, reassembled and adjusted for optimal play-ability. Warm, spread 'vintage American' tone, decent intonation, comfortable key work: I'm very pleased with the condition and play-ability of this saxophone! Comes with period (possibly original) case in solid condition.
