Vintage Wood Clarinet Overhaul: starting at $425
Vintage Saxophone Overhaul: starting at $450 + pad set
Vintage clarinets and saxes must be priced on a case by case basis due to condition issues, quality of construction, age, complexity of mechanism and special-ordered supplies (special pads, for instance). Older saxes, like older clarinets, require a lot of extra time and some specialized tools to obtain the best results. Once I get your horn on my bench, I can give an accurate price for its restoration!
Please remember that I work alone and p/t (around my other obligations) and may have a waiting list, as there are not many competent woodwind techs in the area! That being said, I have a good turnaround time as I don't take on a lot of projects at the simultaneously...

Services for Clarinet

As well as selling instruments that I refurbish, the Vintage Clarinet Doctor would like to offer my skills to anyone having an older clarinet in good condition that needs a full overhaul. I am experienced on Boehm, Full Boehm, Oehler, Simple, McIntyre, and Albert system clarinets in G, Ab, A, Bb, C, and Eb. This will not be a discount clarinet service offering to slam a new set of pads into your horn for $85, this will be a meticulous job (performed by me personally), including:
- Complete dissasembly
- Cleaning and oiling of the body
- Swedging/Countersinking of the mechanism
- Spring balancing & Replacement of faulty springs
- Buffing of the keys, posts, and body
- Re-facing of toneholes as needed
- New key and tenon corks
- All new Roo leather/cork pads
- Reassembly and adjustment
- Play test with a quality mouthpiece and reed
Extra condition issues such as cracks, chips, rusted keys, or an unusual number of loose posts/missing or broken springs will generate extra charges. All of these things take time, skill, and specialized tools. I will do my best to see that the instrument plays as well as it can (given its age and condition) and looks clean and professional.

Services for Saxophone
As well as selling saxophones that I refurbish, I also re-pad Bb & C soprano, Eb alto, C Melody & Bb tenor, and Eb baritone saxophones. A vintage sax takes quite a bit more work and time than a modern horn, and includes:
Dent work, body damage, etc. will need to be outsourced to a local technician with the space and tooling for such work, and a subcontracting charge will be added to the cost of pad work.
